Mark Cuban and Doug Heuck in conversation

Cuban’s RX for PGH

If someone pitched Pittsburgh as a product to Mark Cuban, would he invest? Without a doubt, he says.

We met up with him in Austin to hear about his perception of Pittsburgh’s identity, his personal experience growing up here, and his vision for our future. He shares his journey from growing up here when every kid dreamed of a job at the mill, to his perception of where we are today.

Here’s the entrepreneur’s prescription for Pittsburgh’s growth:

1️⃣ “Become a destination for something.” In his mind, that something is tech and AI. He mentions how our institutions have already put us ahead of the curve. We just need to continue to lean in.

2️⃣ “Reduce friction.” He stresses the importance of creating an environment where it’s easy, seamless, and cost effective to start a business. In his opinion, this is the main obstacle holding us back from attracting new young talent to the area.

3️⃣ “There’s plenty of opportunity.” From low cost of living, to open space (both literally and figuratively), to our culture of innovation, the ingredients are here. We just need to capitalize on our existing momentum and get the word out, he says.
